Phil Wickham “Children of God” Album

Long before I saw Phil Wickham live at the Worship Night in America event, in Sacramento last August, I was already so familiar with many of his songs played on Christian radio station KLOVE.  Though a fan of his songs, At Your Name, Glory, and This Is Amazing Grace, I had never previously owned a Phil Wickham cd.  Something changed after seeing him perform This Is Amazing Grace on stage and in person.  It was, to simply put it…Amazing!  The entire Worship Night in America was amazing…

The next day, I ordered my first Phil Wickham cd, The Ascension, because it had the song, This Is Amazing Grace, on it.  It quickly became a well-listened to album during our car rides.  When the opportunity came along to receive and review the latest album by Phil Wickham, I excitedly  jumped at the chance to score a copy of “Children of God.”  Thanks FlyBy Promotions!

910XM4DXNpL._SY355_

Children of God is becoming another well-listened to cd in our home…or in this case, my minivan.  Though my four year old would rather listen to her Awana Cubbies cd, I tune into Children of God almost daily and both my kids are witnessing my head boppin’ and body movin’ to the sounds of “The Secret Place” and “Your Love Awakens Me.”

My son especially loves Your Love Awakens Me and has asked me to “play it again, Mommy.”

Another favorite song on this album is “Doxology//Amen.”  I used to sing the Doxology at church every Sunday morning during my childhood.  I love this contemporary version of the song.  It feels like I’m sharing a very special part of my childhood with my own kids.

I am really enjoying this newest album by Phil Wickham and am so blessed that it has been added to our music library.  I hope to see him in concert again very soon!

{Giveaway} Captive Dvd

Here it is…my first giveaway of 2016!  A dvd copy of the movie, Captive.

images

DVD Release Date: January 5, 2016

Runtime: 96 minutes

Rating: PG-13 (for mature thematic elements involving violence and substance abuse)

OFFICIAL WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | TWITTER

About the movie:

Based on a miraculous story about the power of faith,  Captive is an “amazing, inspiring” drama about the spiritual collision of two lost souls, Brian Nichols (Golden Globe Nominee David Oyelowo), on the run from police and desperate to make contact with his newborn son, takes recently widowed mother Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) hostage in her own apartment.  Fearing for her life and desperately hoping to see her daughter again,  she turns to Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life for guidance.  Ashley and her captor face a crossroads where they discover hope and light in the midst of despair in the moving film that Dick Rolfe, CEO, Dove Foundation hailed as “powerful.”

There are over 30 minutes of bonus content on this DVD including Journey Through Darkness: Filming Captive and Faith and  The Purpose Driven Life.  Also included with this DVD is a Digital HD copy that can be instantly streamed and downloaded.

From the depths of desperation and helplessness, comes freedom and purpose.

I first heard about this story through K-LOVE radio, so I  was already familiar with the ending prior to watching the movie.  What I didn’t realize or perhaps had forgotten, was the role that Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life, played in these two lives.  During her captivity, Ashely Smith read a chapter from the book to Brian Nichols.  My husband and I liked the movie, but we both thought these particular scenes with the book could’ve gone a little deeper.  The movie does ignite my desire to read The Purpose Driven Life again.

I thought the acting from the entire cast was excellent.  Captive also does a good job showing the events that lead up to the hostage situation, with suspenseful scenes and heart-warming conversations between Ashley and her young daughter.  You get a really good sense of where these two main characters are coming from.

Manic Drive CD Review & Giveaway

“Five-One!, please!”  This is the song that my seven-year old requests over and over again in the car.  “Five-One” refers to cd #5 in my cd changer and song #1 from the Christian band Manic Drives latest album, VIP.  The song is called, “Electric”, and I have to put it on repeat, because my son will seriously ask to hear it played again and again.

Have you heard of Manic Drive?  To be honest, before I was given this opportunity to review the cd, I had never heard of the band.  I listen to Christian music a lot so I was excited for the chance to hear new songs from a new-to-me Christian band.  Before I get to my review, here’s a little more information about Manic Drive…

desktop

ABOUT THE BAND:

Manic Drive has been widely known as a Canadian band who always delivers a great show, but over the past few years and project releases, they have added to their extensive touring of Canadian and US markets multiple Billboard Top 10 & 20 singles on CHR & Christian Rock Radio. Manic Drive is clearly very intentional about reaching their generation and inspiring them to pursue a deeper walk with Christ and to get involved in changing the world they are inheriting. And they are uniquely equipped to do so. The band members, all in their early-mid twenties, have made sacrifices to pursue God’s call on their lives. Their life experience, spiritual maturity and ministry have opened doors to speak into the lives of their own generation and that is perhaps the most defining characteristic of this group of guys.

So my son is definitely a fan of the album, VIP (btw…he has listened to the entire cd), and I have to say that I am a fan too!  I am drawn to the songs’ lyrics, especially to King of Mercy and Indestructible, that remind me of God’s unfailing love and mercy.  I also like songs that combine hymns into their lyrics.  You hear glimpses of two of my favorite hymns, “Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art” in the song, Song to Sing.  Then there’s the upbeat, I want to get up and dance songs, like Electric and VIP.  Those are fun songs to listen to and a great way to start my morning drives.  I’m sure I’ll be listening to “Five-One” in the car for awhile.  😉

{Review and Giveaway}: RAGAMUFFIN: Based On The Life of Rich Mullins DVD

I grew up listening to Rich Mullin’s songs.  Some of my favorites are “Awesome God,” “Step By Step,” and “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” (recorded by Amy Grant).  Even while writing this post, I am reminiscing about my former youth group days of singing & listening to his songs and doing hand motions to the choruses.

Thanks to Flyby Promotions, I was able to watch a film based on Rich Mullin’s life, called RAGAMUFFIN.  Watching this film gave me a better insight into Mullin’s life, during his childhood days growing up on a farm, his college years, and then life in Nashville as a rising Contemporary Christian songwriter and artist.  You get a really good glimpse into Mullins’ heart, the things that he struggled with and his desire to point people to Christ our Savior.

The film is rated PG-13.  There are scenes with smoking, drunkenness and a little bit of violence, so I wouldn’t recommend watching this with younger children.  I thought the actors did a great job and I really enjoyed hearing his songs in the movie.  Make sure to watch the credits after the movie ends.  =)

4857_RagamuffinCoverNew_lgAbout the Film
RAGAMUFFIN is based on the life of Rich Mullins, a musical prodigy who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. An artistic genius, raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church, Rich refused to let his struggles with his own darkness tear him away from a God he was determined to love. As he struggled with success in Nashville and depression in Wichita, Rich desired most of all to live a life of honest and reckless faith amidst a culture of religion and conformity.

About Rich Mullins
Singer and songwriter Richard Wayne “Rich” Mullins was best known for his worship song “Awesome God” which has been embraced as modern classics by many Christians.  His music has been covered by many artists, including Caedmon’s Call, Amy Grant, Jars of Clay, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, John Tesh, and Hillsong United.  Mullins first solo hit, “Awesome God,” appeared on his third album and brought his music to a wider audience.  Rich Mullins was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) on April 29, 2014.

Here is a trailer for RAGAMUFFIN

“Rich was a gifted songwriter with an amazing heart for people. This film reminded me that what really made Rich special was how undistracted he was with the things of this world. His was a heart yearning for God.” – Michael W. Smith Singer, Songwriter
“This film captures the life of one of the most important people in the history of modern evangelicalism, a ragamuffin that our children and our grandchildren need to know about.” – Shane Claiborne Author, Activist
Church Screening Tour
Thanks to a nationwide church-screening tour from January through May 2014, RAGAMUFFIN traveled to 200 screens where it was seen by over 25,000 people at churches, college campuses and even jails.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Family Discussion Guide Review & Giveaway

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released in theaters on May 2nd.  Are you looking forward to seeing it?  I know I am!  Members of our household are definitely Marvel Comics fans and Spider-Man is one of our favorite characters.  My husband introduced our son (age 6) to Spider-Man at an early age and now little sis (age 2) has also joined in on the fun.

About Spiderman
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2™, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

Here’s the trailer for the new movie.

There’s also a great Family Discussion Guide that you can use to spark some thought provoking conversations with your family about the movie.TASM2_bible (1) copy

The discussion guide for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a great resource for families to discuss a range of important themes that include the relationship between personal choices and destiny, living a life that counts, sacrificing yourself in service to others, and the nature of power. This guide will help parents start (or continue) conversations with their children that will inspire them to think outside themselves and challenge them to live lives that matter. The conversations that will result from using this guide will reveal that even the most explosive summer blockbuster can leave lasting, positive impacts on its young viewers.

In the discussion guide, there are six sets of questions.  Each set of questions has it own topic, like “The Nature of Power” and “You Are Somebody Who Is Needed.”  There is also a bible verse/passage included that goes along with each topic.  I’m not sure if we will take our six year old to see the movie just yet (it’s rated PG-13), but I like how the discussion guide is formatted so you can still talk to your kids about each topic, even if they don’t see the movie.  It can be helpful to know who the characters are, but we can introduce the characters from the comic book version first.  I will definitely be thinking about and going over these questions with my husband.  Even if you or your kids are not really into Spider-Man, the discussion questions are great to use to get some conversations going.  And who knows?…maybe this will help turn you into a Spider-Man fan, if you aren’t one already!

GIVEAWAY TIME!!!  You have the opportunity to win an AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 Prize Pack.  The prize pack includes a t-shirt, paper mask and phone case; and the Special edition: The Amazing Spiderman 2 Family Discussion Guide.

{Review and Giveaway}: Kirk Cameron’s UNSTOPPABLE

Why does God let bad things happen to good people?  There is so much pain and suffering in this world.  Doesn’t God care?  I’m sure you’ve heard these questions before or have even asked them yourself.  I know that I’ve thought about them as well.

When I heard about Kirk Cameron’s film, Unstoppable, I knew that I wanted to see it, because he addresses some of these questions.  Thanks to Flyby Promotions, I was able to view this film and have another copy to give away to one of my readers.

unstoppable dvd

ABOUT UNSTOPPABLE
Inspired by the death of Cameron’s close friend who succumbed to cancer at the age of 15, Kirk Cameron takes viewers on an inspiring and hope-filled visual journey to better understand the biggest doubt-raising question in faith: “Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering?”

Going back to the beginning—literally—Kirk investigates the origins of good and evil and how they impact our lives … and our eternities. UNSTOPPABLE will prompt audiences to consider the role that pain and suffering has in our lives, as they affirm their personal views on faith, and encourage conversation starters about God, suffering, and hope.

In theaters for only two weeknights (Sept 24th and Oct 3th, 2013), UNSTOPPABLE: A Live Event with Kirk Cameron sold a staggering 260,000 tickets and reached a theatrical gross of over $3.2 million dollars. In just two nights this independent project sent a loud message – audiences want thought-provoking and meaningful entertainment.

Kirk Cameron is best known for his memorable role as “Mike Seaver,” a cultural icon of the 80’s, with his mullet hairstyle, cool glasses, and wisecracking comebacks. More recently he enjoyed much success with the No. 1 grossing inspirational film of 2008, Fireproof, and his recent documentary, Monumental. Kirk and his wife, Chelsea, were on-screen sweethearts during their Growing Pains years and are the founders of Camp Firefly, where terminally and seriously ill children and their families are provided an all-expense paid retreat (www.CampFirefly.com). Together, Kirk and Chelsea live in California with their six children.

“Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering? Why does God let bad things happen to good people?”  Since the fall of man, there has been pain, suffering and sorrow.  We are not immune to it.  We experience it ourselves in many different ways.  We see it happen to the people closest to us, to our neighbors, and to those around the world.  So where is God in the midst of pain and sorrow?  He is there…right beside us.  From the film’s behind-the scenes extras, Kirk Cameron shares with us a verse from Romans 8:28…”And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”  God has a purpose for our lives and He uses our experiences to fulfill that purpose.  God’s purpose is UNSTOPPABLE!  We just have to trust Him.  He never said that this life on earth would be easy, but He did say that He would never leave us.  We may not have all the answers on this side of heaven, but we know that we can go to God when bad things happen and He will carry us through them.

I watched this film with my husband and we both thought it was pretty good.  Although the dramatizations were a bit long for me, I thought they were artistically well done.  I also liked how he included raw footage in this film, capturing the real, tender moments with his friends.

Here’s a preview of the movie:

About One Way Love
Real life is long on law and short on grace—the demands never stop, the failures pile up, and fear sets in. Life requires many things from us—a stable marriage, successful children, a certain quality of life. Anyone living inside the guilt, anxiety, and uncertainty of daily life knows that the weight of life is heavy. We are all in need of some relief.  Bestselling author Tullian Tchividjian is convinced our world needs a fresh encounter with grace.
About the Author
William Graham Tullian Tchividjian (pronounced cha-vi-jin) is the Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. A Florida native, Tullian is the grandson of Billy and Ruth Graham. My Review – I would recommend One Way Love if you would like to learn more about grace.  While reading this book, I was reminded of my need for God’s grace everyday in my life and even more so, of my need and desire to show grace to others.  Woven throughout these chapters are Tullian’s personal stories about experiencing grace, not just from God but from those closest to him.  If you don’t already know his story, then you might be surprised like I was.  I appreciated his honesty and transparency in his sharing about this journey he has been on. My Review – I had heard good things about Bread & Wine from a friend and was excited to read the book myself.  After hearing Shauna Neiquist speak at a Mothers of Preschoolers Convention in August 2012, I came to the conclusion that she was one of my favorite speakers there.  I was drawn to her warm personality and humorous stories.  She was honest, transparent, witty, relatable.  I felt much the same way as I was reading Bread & Wine, being drawn to Shauna’s warm, honest, transparent, witty, relatable and humorous stories about her life around the table.

I liked that Shauna included recipes in her book.  After reading the first chapter about her mom’s blueberry crisp, I went out to buy the ingredients, made it and enjoyed eating it. I’m not much of a cook but in the chapter “start where you are,” I felt encouraged that I could be good at it one day.  Shauna said it so beautifully when she wrote,

“If you put in the time, the learning, the trying, the mess, and the failure, at the end you will have learned to feed yourself and the people you love, and that’s a skill for life – like tennis or piano but yummier and far less expensive.

I’m not talking about cooking as a performance, or entertaining as a complicated choreography of competition and showing off. I’m talking about feeding someone with honestly and intimacy and love, about making your home a place where people are fiercely protected, even if just for a few hours, from the crush and cruelty of the day.”

Whew!  That takes the pressure off, doesn’t it?  It’s not just about the food but about the relationships that are formed and nourished.  I hope to make my home like that one day, a place where people feel safe and loved and encouraged.  I also want people to see glimpses of God and his love for them when we gather and share our lives together.

Shauna is a great story-teller and I loved reading Bread & Wine.  I learned that life is often times messy and unpredictable, yet it can be even more incredibly beautiful and memorable.  Now it’s my turn to invite people to come and share life around my table.
