When I found out that there would be blackberry picking today at Ardenwood Farm, I knew I had to bring Micah. I thought it would be a fun Mommy & Micah date and the kid loves blackberries! So we headed to the farm with baskets in hand and hoped for the best.
When we got there, we were told that we could pick from the bushes along the fence line. It was a pretty long fence and I think we walked only half of it. Sadly, it was pretty slim picking today. We had to search high & low and behind some prickly thorns for some ripe blackberries. (Ardenwood is hosting another berry picking event in two weeks and there should be plenty of ripe blackberries then.) Micah and I were determined though and set out to pick as many blackberries that we could find.
You just have to pay the admission fees to enter the farm but the blackberries were free. Check out the East Bay Regional Park District website for information on programs and activities. That’s how I found out about the berry picking. I’m hoping to take the kids to a few more EBRPD activities this summer. Note to self and others about berry/fruit picking: Apply sunscreen, wear a hat and bring water to drink. It’s a beautiful, warm day and the sun was beating down on us!
After we left the farm, we went to the farmers market at Bayfair Mall in San Leandro. We bought strawberries, blueberries, eggplant, zucchini, bok choy and Indian food to bring home for lunch. It was fun hanging out with my little guy today. 🙂
